“To breathe easily”,
Canadian artists Alexandre David and Mireille Lavoie used chalkboard circling the existing space of Mino’s Studio to create another visual space. They used chalks draw images such as plants and lung organ to express the theme of the project “A Breathable Room”, which also implies the effects of smog on our physical and symbolic breathing. Chinese artist Avita Guo and audience participated in drawing process according to their own imagination and understanding of the theme.
Alexandre’s work often revolves around reflection on architecture and usable space. While Mireille often meditates inspiration derived from her intimate feelings and memories. From their initial conceptualization of the project by creating another space that will involve audience participation to its final realization that embraced both physical and emotional interaction among artists and audience, “breathing” has become a public topic which usually would stay away from our consciousness, although the complex entanglement of outer environment and inner psychological forces will always affect our freedom and easiness to breathe.
Artist Lynn’s improvisational performance used her body to express personal moods affected “breathing”. When Lynn approach the rails between the second floor and the stairs, she used her right foot wiping the drawing made by Avita on the blackboard, at that moment, Lynn, Avita and two Canadian artists work came into co-inhabitance in the created “breathable” space. Various moods of quietness, anxiety, and nervousness fluctuated along with breathing rhythms and flowed into our tangible senses and consciousness.
“To breathe easily” is only our simple and common wish.
